This book honors some of the occupations a child might choose when he or she grows up in Hawaii. We want to show children that the status of an occupation isn't as important as doing a job well. One of our goals was to picture children and adults who speak Hawaiian. All the children are Hawaiian speakers from the Punana Leo and Hawaiian Immersion schools. All the professionals work at the jobs shown—and most of them speak Hawaiian. In choosing which occupations to feature, we tried to keep in mind our audience—children. The internationally known ‘Aha Punana Leo, Inc. is a non-profit organization which was established in 1983 to revitalize the nearly extinct Hawaiian language and establish schools taught entirely through that language. The following year, the organization founded the first Punana Leo school which was also the first Native American language immersion school in the United States. This book of genealogies, Kumuhonua, was copied from the Honolulu Archives, Book #44, back in the eighties. This book contains mostly ancient genealogies, with some lines leading into the 19th century. You will not find very many modern family connections in this book. In this book, Kumuhonua, you will find pieces of information not available in other published genealogies. For example, Fornander states that he doesn't know from which family descends Kapoleia Kauila, the wife of Kalanikukuma. Her genealogy is included in this book. Also, see the marriage between ‘Umikanaha (kaikaina of Kuwalupakumoku) and Kamaleamaka(kaikuahine/kaikua’ana of Piliwale), thus tying the Kalona branch of O’ahu to the ali’i of Kaua’i. This type of information is valuable for historians of ancient Hawai'i. So much of this kind of information is still available at the Honolulu Archives, Bishop Museum and other libraries. This book was chosen mostly because it was easy to read, as the old style of writing is very difficult to read; but also because it had some good stuff. In 1961 the first edition of the English translation of Samuel Kamakau's Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii was published by Kamehameha Schools Press. Many contributed to make its publication possible. A group of Hawaiian scholars was first selected by the trustees of Bishop Museum to translate Kamakau's florid literary style into readable English. The group included Mary Kawena Pukui, Thomas G. Thrum, Lahilahi Webb, Emma Davidson Taylor, and John Wise. Mary Kawena Pukui then reviewed the entire translation, together with Martha Warren Beckwith, who added the footnotes. Dorothy Barrere and Caroline Curtis proofread the manuscript. The resulting book was an immediate success, and soon became a classic of Hawaiian history. Now, thirty years later, the book has long been out of print. Kamehameha Schools is happy to publish a new edition, with significant advantages over the former edition. Many famous chiefs, mentioned in Hawaiian history, were descended from Hana-laa-nui. The ruling chiefs (noho alii) of Hawaii were of that particular lineage (mookuauhau), and with additions from those of the other islands, the genealogy of Hawaii's chiefs and their ancestors was made complete. Umi-a-Liloa [that is, Umi-son-of-Liloa] was a famous chief, and the reason for his fame was that it was he who united all of the districts of Hawaii through wars. The kingdom became his because of his humbleness and because of the prowess of his adopted (hookama) sons and his care of the god Ku-kaili-moku. Umi was of lowly birth (lepo popolo) [on his maternal side], but he rose until the kingdom was his through his victories in battle. Liloa was a ruling chief, a sacred high chief (alii nui kapu). This volume, compiled at the request of Scott Atkinson on behalf of The Nature Conservancy, includes excerpts from selected historical records and oral history interviews with elder kamaaina of the Kapalilua region of South Kona on the island of Hawaii. The area traditionally identified as Kapalilua extends from the Kealia-Hookena section of Kona to Kaulanamauna, situated on the Kona boundary of Kau, and includes the lands of Papa, Hoopuloa, and Milolii (Figure 1). The archival-historical research and oral history interviews conducted for this study were performed in a manner consistent with Federal and State laws and guidelines for such studies. Two centuries ago, when Hawaiian prophets were still honored for their insights, Kapihe was one of the most gifted. A kahuna or priest in the court of Kamehameha I and a descendant of the famed Napua line, he had prophesied the downfall of the kapu, the ancient religious system and the 1819 Battle of Kuamo?o which decided the course of modern Hawaiian history. One of Kapihe's last great prophecies may have been the one recorded in the Journal of the missionary William Ellis. Although Ellis branded him a "false prophet," he still thought enough of his calling to preserve for posterity the following prophecy: "Kapihe... informed Tamehameha that when he should die, Kuahiro would take his spirit to the sky, and accompany it to the earth again, when his body would be reanimated and youthful; that he would have his wives, and resume his government in Hawai?i; and that, at the same time, the existing generation would see and know their parents and ancestors, and all the people who had died would be restored to life."1 What did Kapihe mean?
