  • Martyrs Pelagia, Theodosia, and Dula of Nicomedia, who suffered under Valentinian (361)[1][4]
  • The Holy Martyr who was formerly an executioner.[5]
  • Venerable Sennouphios the Standard-bearer, of Latomos Monastery in Thessalonica (9th century)[1][6][note 3]
  • Venerable Timon the Hermit (10th century).[7]

  6. ^ An ascetic who lived as a hermit on an island in Lough Derg in Ireland. Many disciples were attracted to him on account of his holiness. Later he founded a monastery and church on the island of the Seven Churches and worked with St Senan. A fragment of the Psalter of St Caimin, copied in his own hand, still exists.

  8. ^ Barontius became a monk at Lonrey near Bourges in France. As a result of a vision he became a hermit, set out for Italy, and settled near Pistoia. There he lived very ascetically with another monk, called Desiderius, who is also honoured as a saint.

  12. ^ From antiquity the Orthodox Church has celebrated with special liturgical joy the occurrence when Pascha falls on March 25 (Old Style) - the Feast of the Annunciation, calling it "Kyriopascha," "the Lord's Pascha". It was precisely on the coincidence of the Feasts of the Annunciation and Pascha on March 25, 1821 (Old Style), that Greece challenged the Turkish Yoke. Kyriopascha has also manifested its miraculous Grace to our own generation by its most recent occurrence in 1991, the year of the demise of Communism in Russia.
  13. ^ The Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25, 1821, when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese. The cry "Freedom or Death" became the motto of the revolution.[20]
