There were 17,889 housing units at an average density of 19 per square mile (7/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 87.35% White, 4.01% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 6.07% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. About 15.38% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 957 square miles (2,480 km2), of which 944 square miles (2,440 km2) is land and 13 square miles (34 km2) (1.3%) is water.[16]
