The Force Behind the Power is a 1991 album, released by Diana Ross on the Motown label. Though unsuccessful in the US, the album and associated single releases saw significant success across the rest of the world. It features production from the likes of James Anthony Carmichael who used to work with The Commodores and Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder and Peter Asher, the album saw Ross solidifying her executive producing skills that she has honed since first leaving Motown in 1981. "When You Tell Me That You Love Me" became a Top 10 hit across many international territories, the single was #1 in the Philippines, #2 in the U.K., #6 in Norway, Top 10 in The Netherlands and a Top 40 R&B single in the states.

Internationally, it was certified double platinum (600,000 copies sold) in the UK, Gold and Top 10 in Japan and The Netherlands among its highlights. It yielded five top 40 hits globally, including the second UK Top 10 single from the album, "One Shining Moment", which made UK #10, and #11 for "If We Hold on Together".

The song "If We Hold On Together" was prominently featured in Don Bluth's 1988 animated adventure film The Land Before Time. Despite having flopped upon its U.S. release in early 1989 (reaching only #26 on the Adult Contemporary chart and failing to reach the Billboard Hot 100), it rose to prominence after released as a single worldwide in 1989 (most prominently in Japan in 1990, after it was used as the theme song for the TBS drama Omoide ni Kawaru Made).[2] It reached #1 on the Japanese Oricon International single charts for 12 contiguous weeks making it the biggest selling record by a foreign artist; and in total, sold over 600,000 copies.[3][4] Jordin Sparks performed the song on a 2007 episode of American Idol.

The international edition of The Force Behind the Power has two additional tracks, "No Matter What You Do," a Top 5 R&B duet with Al B. Sure!, as well as "You And I".

The album was successful enough internationally that Ross' "Here and Now" World Tour lasted nearly 2 years garnering television specials, gold and platinum certifications in the U.K. to Japan to Australia.
