Kaniyur is a suburb of Coimbatore city which is also a town panchayat in Tirupur District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kaniyur is also called Dravida Iyakkathin Thotti. It is one the 'K' village located near to udumalpet.Famous for its Arthanareshwar Temple, Mariamman Temple and Medicinal Jothi Temple and The 100 yrs old Kaniyur Masjid.

It is located on the banks of the Amaravathi River in the Tirupur District. Several State Ministers of the Tamil Nadu State have been born in this town namely K.A. Mathialagan, K A Krishnasamy.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Kaniyur had a population of 15,200. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Kaniyur has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 61%. In Kaniyur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The Youngsters of Kaniyur have started a foundation to serve people and giving awareness to people who are in back and to make Kaniyur a role model village in Tirupur district. The foundation is named Puthiya Paathai Makkal Iyakkam. . It has a pleasant climate all through the year.

Notable People

Kaniyur Thottikattu Veedu Arunachalam Pillai - Father of 5 distinguished sons and a daughter with a lovable philianthropic wife in the area. His sons include Mr. K.a.Arunachalam, the eldest son once he ruled as an exporter of Kaniyur Betal Leaves to Mumbai from the fields of K -Villages that are fed by Amaravathi River. The bewtel Leaves cultivation was routed by a virus in early eighties. Then, K.A. Murugesan a Rice Mill owner and a collegue of Udumalai Chairman Kanakarajan who was tall leader in Justice Party in those days integrated Coimbatore District and when Periyar E.V. Ramasamy decided to quit Congress , organised a confluence of local bigwigs in the palace of Uttukuli Zameen to start a self respect movement a. K.A.Murugesan is an ordant ,one of the earliest Periyar's follower and a college of Arighnar C.n.annadurai . He was the person to bring Kaniyur in the political map of Dravidian movement and the history coined the word in Tamil Nadu Politics as " KANIYUR FAMILY' which gave a one of five founder leaders- IAMPERUM THALAIVERKAL of DMK in 1949 to go as a ploitical movement to capture the power in Tamil Nadu state. and Mr. K.A. Murugesan lended his backing for their youngest brother Mr.K.A.Krishnasamy known as KAK by all in Tamil Nadu to be second in rank with Puratchi Thalaiver MGR to found AIADMK when true followers of Arighnar C. N.Annadurai after his demise saw a seachange in political bribe culture in government by M.r. . Kalaigfhnar Karunanidhi who became the Chief Minister after Anna's demise with the support and nomination by MGR-Mathialagan combine. The dismissal of MGR and Mathi from DMK resulted in 14 years political and Governmental adorn shutup for Mr. Karunanithi. Kaniyur Family is responsible for creation of political awareness in Udumalpet, Thirupur, Pollachi Dharapuram and Palani taluks of Kongunadu. In the Kaniyur family at present Prof. Dr. K.M.Selvaraj Former Professer of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciemces University and Tamil Nadu Agricultural Unuverst, Coimbatore is notable product of Kaniyur and based in Chennai . He is political biografic author of dravidian movement of Coimbatore District and authored Biography of Mr. K.A.Mathialagan as MAMATAI MATHIALAGAN listed in Wickipeadia. and a polical biography of K.A. Murugesan - ANTHA NAALUM VANTHIDATHO -a heart rendering political history of Kaniyur.

  • .K.V.Ganapathi subramaia Iyer by his illustrated service to Kaniyur and surrounding villages founded Sri Venkatakrishna High School with suportive administrative skills of Mr. K.C. Sundara rajaiyer and Mr. Duraippa alias Ramasubramaia Iyer which still an educational monument in Kaniyur.
