Theme Star Wars

A Star Wars-themed land, currently and unofficially referred to as Star Wars Land, is an upcoming themed area being developed at Disneyland at the Disneyland Resort and Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.[1] The new land was announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger at D23 Expo on August 15, 2015.[2] The land at each park is expected to encompass 14 acres each.[3] According to Disney COO Tom Staggs, construction on both versions of the land is expected to begin in early 2016.[4]

Design

Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, stated that the land "will introduce you to a Star Wars planet you’ve never seen before — a gateway planet located on the outer rim, full of places and characters familiar and not so familiar." The land will immerse the guest into the Star Wars Universe. According to Bob Iger, it will be "occupied by many inhabitants; humanoids, aliens and droids … the attractions, the entertainment, everything we create will be part of our storytelling. Nothing will be out of character or stray from the mythology."[5] Concept art depicts a full size Millennium Falcon situated among alien buildings built into tall cliffs.[6] The Star Wars-themed land will have two new attractions, including one that will allow riders to control the Millennium Falcon, and another that will place guests into the middle of a battle between The First Order and the Resistance.[6][7] There will also be a version of the cantina.[8]

Parks

Disneyland

At the Disneyland theme park Star Wars Land will be built just to the north of Frontierland, where Big Thunder Ranch is currently located, and will use some backstage areas.[8] In order to make room for the expansion, Disney purchased land off site in order to replace the offices and warehouse that will be removed to build the land.[9] Conceptual drawings for the new land show it to be a new world that will be a remote trading port and one of the last stops before wild space.[10]

Beginning in January 2016, several Rivers of America attractions—including the Disneyland Railroad, Mark Twain Riverboat, Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island, Sailing Ship Columbia, Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, and Fantasmic!—will close temporarily to allocate construction of the land.[11] Big Thunder Ranch will close permanently on January 10, 2016.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

At the Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park Star Wars Land will be part of a major expansion of the park that will include a new Toy Story Land.[2]
