Sudhir Ruparelia is a businessman and entrepreneur in Uganda.

Overview

He is the Chairman and majority shareholder in the companies of the Ruparelia Group.[2] His investments are mainly in the areas of banking, insurance, education, broadcasting, real estate, floriculture, hotels and resorts. He is reported to be the wealthiest individual in Uganda.[3] There is an urban Ugandan legend that Sudhir owns half of the buildings in Kampala, but he denies it;[4] he does admit to owning a quarter of the buildings in Kampala's Central Business District.[5] In November 2013, he was reported to be the 24th wealthiest individual in Africa, with an estimated net worth of US$1.1 billion.[6]

History

Sudhir Ruparelia was born in Mengo Hospital, in Mengo, a western suburb of Uganda's Capital City, Kampala.[7] His grandfather reached Mombasa in 1897 and came to Uganda in 1903. His father was born in Uganda in 1932. Sudhir has two sisters and one brother. He attended Bat Valley Primary School in Kampala, from P1 to P6, then Jinja Main Street Primary School in Jinja for P7 and Jinja Secondary School. Then in 1971, he came back to Kampala to study from Old Kampala Senior Secondary School.

He moved to the Ruparelia Group of Companies.[5]

Personal details

Sudhir Ruparelia is married to Jyotsna and they have three children: Meera (married to Ravi Kotecha in 2014) is the eldest, Rajiv is his son, Sheena is the younger daughter.
