The 42 is a residential skyscraper in Kolkata city of West Bengal in India.[1] The project is located in Chowringhee, the central business district of the city. It is currently the tallest building in the entire East India. It will stand between Tata Centre and Jeevan Sudha. It was first proposed in 2008 but was stalled for nearly two years.[2] Again in 2010, it got some response. Currently the project is under construction.

The proposed skyscraper is facing yet another hurdle.[3] The developers of "The 42" are now facing a civil suit in the Calcutta High Court filed by ITC Limited, the owners of the adjoining 'Fountain Court' property. The suit filed by ITC claims that ITC's right to receive light and air will be violated by the 60-storeyed residential building being constructed to the west of its 'Fountain Court' property. On August 19, 2013, the Calcutta High Court passed an order that any steps taken by the developers would be subject to the outcome of the case filed by ITC. On May 8, 2014, the Court ordered that the developers of "The 42" should not proceed with the construction at a pace to defeat the interests of ITC. (Calcutta High Court, GA Case No 2698 / 2013) The matter is pending before the Calcutta High Court.

The 42 will rise to a height of 252 metres (827 ft) and will comprise 56 residential apartments and one duplex at the top two floors. Once completed, 'The 42' will be the tallest structure in Kolkata, as well as the eastern India.

The 42 is a residential tower. A multi-level car parking block with five star club facilities at the top is also present. Adjacent to the site is also a heritage building that will be eventually converted into a modern hotel.

Architect Hafeez Contractor, Mumbai is the chief architect for the project. Architect Subir Basu is the local architect. Design Cell, Gurgaon, headed by landscape architect Mrs. Savita Punde are the landscaping consultants. PIA, Bangkok are doing the interiors. Structural design solutions are provided by Magnusson Klemencic Associates, USA in collaboration with JW Consultants, Mumbai.

The 42 is named such because it has the address of 42B, Chowringhee Road.

The project is being built by four major developers: the city-based Mani Group, Diamond Group, Alcove Realty and Bangalore-based Sattva Group.
