Excerpt: The Persian Gulf region is rich in oil and gas resources but has a history of armed conflict and major threats to U.S. national security. The region has seen three major wars in the past two decades: the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88), the Persian Gulf war (1991), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003). This report, which will be revised periodically, discusses U.S. efforts to manage remaining Gulf security interests as well the new challenges highlighted by the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and to adapt to the aftermath of the U.S.-led offensive to change Iraq’s regime (Operation Iraqi Freedom).
