Description
The Firemen interviewed were from the local Salford Fire Brigade near Manchester in England. The areas covered by the research included :- their attitudes to firefighting and to the various types of fires they dealt with : how they dealt with the "down time" when not firefighting : the effect of their shift pattern on their family and leisure time : the overall "work-leisure" relationships of these firemen.

Summary
This is the "first take" on a sociology research project in Salford, England in 1974 . The Firefighters were interviewed using questionnaire and tape recorded as they anwered the questions .Individul questionnaires were then leter filled in , or transcribed from the tape recorded interviews : there was a completed questionnaire for each fireman . The idea was to get more participation from the respondents than a questionnaire only approach could provide . This "first take" submission of my M.Sc. thesis . It has a cleaner feel to it that the final version submitted in 1977. This is partly because I kept "tweaking" the final version even after submission . This version is probably easier to read because I left the typed manuscript largely as it came back to me from the typist: I did fewer handwritten alterations compared to the final version . Overall I do not know which of the two version is best : so both are included for "completeness"

Excerpt
"It's a strange experience when you go in first , and it's really hot. When you go in you usually have a face mask on you know , but your hands are not covered. It's a queer experience. Have you ever put your hands in boiling water? - you pull them out because it is hot but in a hot place there is nowhere to put your hand."
