For over fifty years, both civilian and military pilots have seen Unidentified Aerial Phenomena 1 (UAP), also commonly called Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). This catalogue is a compilation of more than 1300+ such sightings, by military pilots, private pilots and airliners crews. These cases are special for several reasons. Training and experience make pilots and crews much more reliable witnesses than others. They are used to unusual meteorological phenomenons. They have the added advantage of being able to approach the phenomenon. Sometimes they can even overfly the object, observing it between themselves and the earth below. Military pilots are trained to estimate distances, shapes and speed of flying machines. Sometimes, pilots’ sightings are confirmed by radar detection, observers on the ground (control tower personnel, Ground Observer Corps, civilians,..) or other pilots in flight. One of the United States’ greatest military advantages is rapid global mobility. The Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) provides a crucial supplement to the military’s mobility resources in time of war or national emergency. The proliferation of man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS), however, poses a growing threat to the CRAF and its critical airlift capacity. In this study, Lt Col Glen Downing describes the US government’s historical and potential future uses of the CRAF during contingency operations. He examines current CRAF policies, the operating environment, and the MANPAD threat, describing the negative consequences of the shoot down of a CRAF airliner. This report presents the results of a comprehensive review of 600 cases over a period of 64 years during which pilots reported the presence of one or more aerial phenomena Unidentified (PAN) during their flight. In 443 cases (74%), the PAN has been described as "Objects" (circular in 42% of cases) rather than as light sources. In 162 cases (27%), visual observation is confirmed by radar detection (ground or embedded). This report specifically analyzes the 290 cases (48%) in which the PAN had (or could have) an impact on flight safety. In 108 cases (37%), the pilots felt that possibility of an impact on the safety of the flight was such that they have completed a report or Airprox of Airmiss. It was highlighted that the events with a potential impact on safety Air is the most reported: "The PAN approach on a collision course" (78 cases) and "PAN circled around and / or maneuver close to the plane" (59 cases).
