Turtle Mountain was created in 1987 by current President/CEO So Delicious Dairy Free. Turtle Mountain followed that up in 2001 with the introduction of Purely Decadent, a premium line of frozen desserts sold in pints.

Turtle Mountain’s company name was inspired by a place in Nicaragua that borders the ocean, where sea turtles lay their eggs. Natives to the area refer to the place as Turtle Mountain.[3] As part of its company mission, Turtle Mountain donates a portion of its profits to the Sea Turtle Restoration Project, an organization that seeks to protect endangered sea turtle populations around the world.

On March 7, 2007, Turtle Mountain announced a partnership with Dan Piraro, the creator of the syndicated panel cartoon Bizarro. The campaign's stated intention is to "tap children's natural affinity for animals and educate them about healthy nutrition and the impact of factory farming on animals and the environment."[5] As part of the alliance, Turtle Mountain launched a brand of allergen-free fruit pops, dubbed "So Delicious Kidz Pops".
