Sandvik Coromant is a Swedish company that supplies cutting tools and services to the metal cutting industry.

Sandvik Coromant is headquartered in Sandviken, Sweden and is represented in more than 130 countries with some 8,000 employees worldwide.[1] It is part of the business area of Sandvik Machining Solutions, which is within the global industrial group Sandvik. (In 2012, Sandvik was named #58 on Forbes’ “The World’s Most Innovative Companies” list.)[2]

The company began as a small, production unit for cemented carbide tools in Sandviken, Sweden when Wilhelm Haglund was assigned the job as manager of the unit in 1942.[3] However, new innovations and manufacturing methods led to the establishment of a more industrialized unit in Gimo, Sweden in 1951. Today, Sandvik Coromant is a global company with production facilities connected worldwide to three distribution centers in the US, Europe and Asia.

Standards and certifications

Sandvik Coromant has received certification for international standards such as the ISO 26623 standard for tool holding systems as well as the ISO inserts, around which an industry-leading recycling program[4] was created, and the ISO 13399 standard for simplifying the exchange of data for cutting tools between different systems such as, CAD, CAM, CAE, and PDM/EDM.

Research and development

Sandvik Coromant invests extensively in R&D and has fully equipped research and development centers around the globe. Each of these Application Centers [5] has a unique R&D focus on specific industry segments including aerospace, automotive, die & mold, and deep hole machining. In addition, Sandvik Coromant has worldwide R&D centers, nine product development centers and advanced centers for engineered solutions.

The most notable of Sandvik Coromant’s drilling line is the CoroDrill. The CoroDrill played a crucial role in the 2010 rescue of 33 Chilean miners trapped below 2,200 feet of solid rock in the Atacama Desert of Chile.[9] The drilling technique was featured on the pilot episode of Edge Factor, a 3D stereoscopic web-series studying extreme technology and engineering technology.[10]

Boring

Sandvik Coromant produces a variety of tools for various boring applications,[11] including:

The most notable of Sandvik Coromant’s boring line is the CoroBore.

Tool Holding Systems The most notable of Sandvik Coromant’s tool holding systems is the Coromant Capto® system. It is an integrated and modular tool face that holds to the ISO 26623 standard for tool holding systems.

Training and education

Training

Sandvik Coromant has more than 25 Productivity Centers[12] worldwide that offer customers, distributors, employees, educators, and students theory-based training[13] courses, seminars and live demonstrations. Sandvik Coromant Productivity Centers are all ISO 9001 compliant.

Education

Sandvik Coromant is involved with a number of educational facilities and organizations across the globe. Part of the organization’s mission is the continued advancement of industry knowledge and education.

Sandvik AB founded the Gӧranssonska Skolan[14] in 2002 to address the skills gap the manufacturing industry is facing. This three-year technical upper secondary school in Sandviken, Sweden was established to provide students with the technical skills needed to enter the workforce.

Wilhelm Haglund’s Gymnasium[15] is a joint project between Sandvik AB and Östhammar Municipality, founded in 2007. It is a technical upper secondary school in Gimo, Sweden, which provides students with three years of technical education in preparation for workforce entry. Educational tracks include Engineering, IT, Research and Development, among others.

In 2008, the Sandvik Coromant Centre for Machinist Technology opened at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. This facility increased the school's capacity for training machinist apprentices.

Sandvik Coromant is also engaged in various R&D projects at the Chalmers University of Technology Materials and Manufacturing Technology and Applied Mechanics.[16]

Partnerships

Sandvik Coromant is a member of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), working with the Centre's partners: Boeing, Rolls-Royce and the University of Sheffield.[17] The AMRC, established in 2001 and located in Advanced Manufacturing Park, shares research and support in areas of assembly, composite materials, structural testing and advanced machining for the aerospace industry.

Sandvik Coromant has also partnered with the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing as one of its originating industry members,[18] as well as the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology [19] and the Manufacturing Technology Centre.[20]
