Excerpt: Participatory training is ?participatory? because learning occurs through the active engagement of the training participants. It is ?training? because learning opportunities are created by presenting new information, together with analytical tools that participants can use to reflect on their own work experiences. Participatory training means that the learning methods and course content are centred on the needs and interests of participants. It is completely different from conventional ?teaching?. The trainer structures and supports group learning, while participants develop a range of strategies, tools and methods for answering questions. Table 10.1 describes the ways in which participatory training differs from conventional teaching.
