A hundred years ago an eminent European pathologist, Rudolf Virchow, said that once the interests of the privileged ceased to dictate the pattern of public health, the protagonists of health would become honoured statesmen, pillars of society; and he added that this could be achieved through political struggle. A century later, an eminent African pathologist, Dr Comlan A.A. Quenum, entered upon a strenuous political struggle for the health of the African peoples, and in so doing earned himself a place of honour in Africa's social history. Since 1965, when he assumed the functions of Director of the WHO Regional Office for Africa, Dr Quenum, a dear friend and colleague, has stubbornly and unceasingly carried on the daily struggle to secure social justice in the field of health for all his African sisters and brothers. It is through political and social struggle, carried on without respite and backed by health technologies appropriate to the reality of Africa, that social justice will be attained, enabling all the African peoples to enjoy a level of health which will allow them to work productively and participate actively in the life of their communities. Accordingly, I have genuine pleasure in writing the preface to this volume devoted to Dr Quenum's campaign of the past twenty years. In so doing I would like to encourage the African peoples to draw from the example of Dr Quenum the determination to persevere in the social revolution which will bring health for all by the year 2000, and the life in dignity to which they are entitled. The struggle for health will continue!
