The modern generation of pesticides has now been in use for over a half-century, replacing older and less eflicient plant-derived pesticides, such as nicotine, and chctnical pesticides, such as the salts of arsenic. Many of the older gcncration of compounds are highly toxic, and their use was restricted, but the advent of DDT, with its wide speclrr~ni of activity antl low human health hazard seemed to be the dawn of a new age.
