INTRODUCTION 1. BACKGROUND It is already a half-century since modem pesticides began to be introduced. They replaced older plant-derived pesticides, such as nicotine, and other chemical pesticides, including the salts of arsenic. Many of the older compounds were highly toxic, and their use by the public was restricted in many countries. The advent of DDT, with its wide spectrum of activity and low human health hazard seemed to be full of promise for the control of agricultural and public health pests. As the organochlorine pesticides were followed by organophosphoms compound and the carbamates, so the benefits of their use became apparent; rises occurred in both the quantity and quality of crops, and animal health improved. It cannot be disputed that the world could not have sustained the nutrition of its increasing population without the use of modern pesticides. They have also contributed significantly to improvements in human health through the control of vector-borne diseases.
