Excerpt
A notable achievement of the United Nations Women's Decade (1975-1985) was the tremendous raising of awareness of women's plights and issues, women's contributions and potentials in health and development and, more importantly, the need to view women's contributions as absolute requisites for sustainable development. In 1985, marking the end of the UN Women's Decade, WHO's South-East Asia Regional O f f e (SEARO) brought out Regional Health Paper No: 8 'Women in Health and Development in South-East Asia': This gave an overview of the stdus of women, their needs, especially health needs, their role in health and development and the problems encountered by women. Some basic information pertaining to the countries of the Regwn was recorded and the role of WHOISEARO in this area of crucial importance was presented.
