In January of 1895, a nationalist rebellion broke out against the Republic of Hawaii. The rebellion was crushed in two days by Republican forces who outgunned the nationalist forces. The Queen was arrested and brought before a military tribunal. The Republic found her guilty of “misprision of treason” (branding her a traitor) and fined her $5,000 and five years of hard labor (Liliuokalani 1990 [1898]:289). Instead of hard labor though, they decided to imprison her in a corner room of Iolani Palace for eight months. The Queen later said, “My crime was that I knew my people were conspiring...to throw off the yoke of the stranger and oppressor” (278). Not being able to correspond with the outside world, the musically gifted Queen Liliuokalani sought solace during her imprisonment through music. She composed “The Queen's Prayer,” one of her most famous hymns, and dedicated it to her niece, Princess Kaiulani. In it, she asked God to forgive those who imprisoned her and let her nation be pure. This volume, compiled at the request of Scott Atkinson on behalf of The Nature Conservancy, includes excerpts from more than 130 oral history interviews that have been conducted by Kepa Maly over the last twenty-eight years. The interviewees were born between the 1890s to 1950s, and all shared personal knowledge—either in native beliefs, traditions, customs and practices; the locations of, and types of fish caught; or about the changing the conditions of the resources—in Hawaiian fisheries. Follow up discussions were also conducted in review of the drafttranscripts, and the review process sometimes resulted in the recording of additional narratives with the interviewees, and modifications to the interview transcripts. The waa, or the canoe, played a very important role in Hawaii's history and traditional lifestyle. When the early settlers migrated from Kahiki to Hawaii, they journeyed by double-hulled canoes (waa kaulua). Upon their arrival, they continued to build and use canoes for work, travel, and play. Having found an abundance of very tall and large koa trees (scientific name: Acacia koa) in the islands, the settlers began the practice of making canoes from single, hollowed-out logs. The resultant "dugout" canoes were distinctly different from the plank-lashed canoes that had carried them from Kahiki. The Hawaiians constructed canoes of various designs and sizes. The first edition of The Ahupuaa, published in 1979, was planned and developed by the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Studies Institute. It was the first publication undertaken by the institute, which was created in 1978 to consolidate the efforts of Hawaiian studies specialists from several Kamehameha programs. Kamehameha staff members Nuulani Atkins, Hooulu Cambra, Peter Galuteria, Donald D. Kilolani Mitchell, Gordon Piianaia, and Mahela Rosehill cooperated on research and writing. Their efforts were supplemented by Orpha Bernie, who provided clerical support; Fred Cachola, who authorized the project; Grady Wells, who coordinated printing; and Julie Williams, who created illustrations. Two centuries ago, when Hawaiian prophets were still honored for their insights, Kapihe was one of the most gifted. A kahuna or priest in the court of Kamehameha I and a descendant of the famed Napua line, he had prophesied the downfall of the kapu, the ancient religious system and the 1819 Battle of Kuamo?o which decided the course of modern Hawaiian history. Thai agriculture is traced through prehistory, agro-cities, and religious empires with immigrant Tai, to a sustainable wet glutinous rice culture which shaped institutions for an exporting society. Agriculture's provision of security and wealth increased with population and Chinese and European agribusiness, until accessible land was expended. Employment, crisis resilience, self-sufficiency, rural social support, and culture were maintained through agriculture, although hampered by institutional orientations to taxation more than research and education. By the 1960s, agribusiness contrasted with small-holders. Thailand is one of the world's few major agricultural exporters, leading in rice, rubber, canned pineapple, black tiger prawn, and regional chicken meat production and export, and feeding four times its population from less intensive agriculture than its neighbours.
