It was in fun rather than on any authority of research that I answered a question, ‘What is the motto of the Limmer family’? I replied, ‘Teneo Vestrum Caput Tenus’, which roughly translates as ‘keep your head down as far as…’ The task of filling in the dots is yours. 'The Grindstone' certainly fits the dots. Limmers certainly gained a hallmark of hard workers down the ages. 'The parapet' also fits, for there were few that spoke out too loudly on controversial subjects. Clearly, they associated with Puritans or church reformists but they are not among the verbal few. You cannot say for certain if they were royalists or parliamentarians, while the civil war rages they kept their head down producing and selling the grain so needed during the period- no matter which side you may be on. The intimate connection between Hawaiians and aina (land) is the focus of two articles this year. In a piece that weaves together scholarly research and personal moolelo (storytelling), cultural beliefs about land, language, and community reveal strong implications for understanding Hawaiian well-being. Likewise, the importance of cultivating a strong sense of place among students and their families is emphasized within Ike Aina, a curriculum grounded in experiential learning and indigenous literacy. This year is a mixture of joy and nostalgia personally, because it is my last year as editor as I turn the reins over to Brandon Ledward, who has been a diligent team member working to produce volumes four and five of this journal. Molokai: Future of a Hawaiian Island This vision statement was created by numerous groups of the Molokai community and largely based on work from the generations before us. There are too many contributors to list, but on page 52, there is a hui of opio and makua who are instrumental in carrying forward the vision of this document, and they may be contacted for further information. In light of longstanding challenges to our aina (land), cultural tradi- tions, and lifestyle, community members joined together to articulate a vision for the future of Molokai. The process was innovative yet organic, bringing together individuals from different generations and with ike (knowledge) from a wide range of sources. The emerging document describes a desired state for the island, where the question of development is secondary to the promise to malama (protect and nurture) natural and cultural resources. Welina mai! Welcome to the inaugural issue of Hulili, a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal on Hawaiian well-being. The word hulili is defined as “ladder, bridge, as to scale a cliff or cross a gully” (Hawaiian Dictionary, Pukui & Elbert, 1986, p. 89). Our vision for Hulili is to create a multidisciplinary forum for current research that examines the nature, needs, and strengths of Hawaiians, their families, and their communities. We believe that through collaboration and critique, Hulili will foster new connections and shared insights and mobilize greater Hawaiian well-being. The seeds of this work were planted last year at Kamehameha Schools’ first annual research conference on the education and well-being of Hawaiians. A common mistake in real and financial markets is a mix-up of means and ends. A showcase cropped up during the financial crisis of 2008 and its aftershock including the debt crisis in Southern Europe. In response to the fiasco, policymakers round the world wasted trillions of dollars worth of public funds on makeshift schemes that ended up hobbling the financial forum and the real economy. Upon closer inspection, however, the epic blowup was a consequence of excessive meddling in the markets rather than the outgrowth of a laisser-faire policy as was widely assumed in the public sector as well as the private segment. The next step is to thrash out a trenchant plan that exploits the opportunities and avoids the pitfalls in the landscape. The third task is to put the resulting plan into action with gumption and dispatch. In the case of the debt crisis, the proper course would require a cogent agenda to ensure a speedy recovery of the financial forum and the real economy. On the downside, the damage done to date by the banksters and politicos is far too massive to allow for a quick or painless recourse. On the upside, though, the lack of a pat answer does not mean that there are no useful cures, or that the problems should be left to fester on their own. It is the argument of this paper that the Canadian government has not yet achieved its goals of women’s equality, elimination of child poverty and optimal national productivity due to an oversight in social policy that neglects the unpaid caregiving sector. The care of the sick, elderly, handicapped, dying and the young has been historically a female role and as women have moved into paid labor, this role has been devalued creating barriers both to those who try to juggle career and family and to those who for a time prioritize the caregiving side, with serious financial and social penalties. Arguments are noted from sociology, health, economics and feminist theory to support the claim that recognition of the care sector is a vital step to achieving equality and ‘best interests’ goals. The present justification for one-sided support of the care sector, focusing only on paid care is analyzed for its lapses in logic, its negatives stereotyping of the unpaid role and its motivations which may undermine the goals it seeks to achieve....
